The Pilot Program is designed to teach students to "pilot" themselves and guide their study. Teaching time management and allowing students a bit more freedom within the classroom gives them a more solid experience in preparing for post-secondary education or employment. Students will work together with instructors to make weekly plans and set weekly or monthly goals based on coursework and credit requirements. History/Social Studies Students participating in HLT HS Integrated Studies will investigate major world and US events that have shaped the modern world. Students will be given key questions to research utilizing various resources such as living books and recorded lectures. Students will participate in a weekly Socratic style discussion covering research topics, current events, government and philosophy. Students will work together to develop projects to show their learning. The goal of this course is to provide students a safe environment to explore their interests and thoughts and use their new-found knowledge of history to make sense of the crazy times in which we are now living. Through the use of key questions and project-based learning students will begin to develop their personal world view.
English 9, 10, 11, or 12 It is our heartfelt belief that good literature should be read and experienced for what it is; good literature. Student will be asked to read literature that coincides with their chosen history track. Students will be encouraged to relate lessons learned from their individual reading during group discussions. Several short stories and short works of poetry will be read together. As young adults, it is imperative that students learn to express themselves through written communication. IEW’s Teaching Writing with Structure and Style will be utilized for basic instruction in composition. Each year, the students will engage in a study of Shakespeare during J-Term. Writing assignments will correspond to the student’s history and/or science studies. The year will begin with learning how to key word outline a short passage and progress through writing a 3 reference research paper as the final assignment. Students already having experience with IEW will be placed on a different track and presented with more challenging work.
Credit Assignment Students taking HLT High School Integrated Studies will have the opportunity to earn the following credits:
Biology and A/P Physical Science and Chemistry Instructor: Isaiah Niess Recommended: Grades 9-12 Biology and A&P Thursdays 9:30-11:30 Physical Science & Chemistry Thursdays 11:30-1:30
The Biology and Anatomy & Physiology, and the Chemistry and Physical Science Tracks offers a unique option for students wanting to study high school sciences. High School Biology and A&P will share an integrated classroom. These tracks have similar foundations of study and therefore lend themselves to an integrated study with clear paths for those working on a Biology credit and additional work for those working on an A&P credit. Physical Science and Chemistry Tracks will also share an integrated classroom in order to use time and group study in the best way for students. These two sciences are hands-on and lend well to the integrated classroom model.
Leadership and Personal Development Guide: Nick Zeto with Dr. Trudy Abel Recommended Grades: 9-12 Each year we include a Leadership and Personal Development track for our High School students. This track uses different key instructors and resources to touch on leadership and life skills as well as personal development. In the past we have utilized the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens for example and included study skills and some ACT Prep. This year, we will cover leadership from a philosophical point of view.
At the beginning of each year, we have a Leadership Luncheon and celebrate our Seniors and discuss student leadership and the upcoming school year. Our PILOT students work throughout the year in various roles and help to lead and plan events and projects with the classes. Our students and parents love our PILOT kids. PILOT students also help plan and execute HLT Kick-off Week and other annual events.
High School Math
Guide: Donna McMorris Foundations / Pre-Algebra Thursdays 11:30-1:30 Algebra I / Geometry Thursdays 9:30-11:30
Each student will complete a Math Assessment before classes begin and speak with our Diagnostic Specialist to determine the best curriculum, grade level, and learning style for your student. Using Math-U-See and/or Math Essentials, this class will bring concepts weekly which will be taught and practiced in class followed by homework to be done by or before the next time the class meets. Students will have access to the instructor to assist with understanding concepts, getting feedback, monitoring your student's progress and time-on-task. This enhanced learning support will allow students to work at their level and pace with an experienced teacher available to them. Students who are working on a different level will be able to work on their own during this time and have access to the instructor for assistance as needed.
