Wow, were we busy! In your envelope you will find a phonics "Dog's Life" card game we played, you must find 3 rhymimg blend words. Also we played a chardes game using action verbs, also sent home, it is the sheet with explanation marks to cut out into cards. Our focus this week is on beginning and ending blends.
We shared Down, Down, the Mountain, and described the Appalchian culture. Please continue to explore this, through books or show pictures online of the culture and the locate the region in the United States with your child, we barely covered this in class. We discussed the literary device with the silly name: Onomatopoeia; a worksheet has been sent home to reinforce the meaning. Please, no need to return any work, just ideas for you to continue to work on, at home.
I had a chance to talk with some of you, during the month of October we are going to focus on a Circus theme and incorporate a research project on an animal of your child's choice. I have a prepackaged set of materials but it only has a monkey, elephant, tiger or zebra to choose from. We will cover the giraffe in class, and be reading giraffe related stories. (see Calendar of books handout.) It would be helpful if you could send me a remind, or a reply to this post or put a note in your child's envelope which animal you would like to study. OR You may choose something totally different and do the project on your own. I am asking the children to present the week of 19th and 26th of October. You may keep it as simple as the sheets I will hand out or as creative as you like, including posters or artwork or 3D sculpture in legos, for example. I want to make this fun for the students.
I can not decorate the room as a circus because I teach Tues/Wed to older children, but I would also like you as a family to practice a circus talent he/she can show the class. For example, I can put masking tape on the carpet and have a tight rope walker, I have juggling balls if someone wants to learn how to juggle. You can decorate a hoola hoop with streamer and tame a stuffed animal lion, be creative! I would like to preform our "circus" Nov.2nd, since it is after Halloween, we can substitute this instead of a Halloween party. You are welcome to bring snacks, keep in mind the circus theme, just no peanuts, we have a food allergy in the building. Check out Pinterest for ideas, this should be a fun few weeks for the children. You are more than welcome to come to Tutorial to hear your child present his/her animal report and on Nov.2nd, Circus Day.
The story, All the Secrets of the World, will be postponed until the spring semester. Any questions please contact me, please respond, again if you did on Thursday, as to which animal you would like to study. I will have copies avaialble next Thursday so you have a few weeks to prepare your reports. Please feel free to make it on your child's ability level, the handout is just a place to start.
Thanks, and have a Blessed week!
In your envelope you will find a Pete the Cat page to fill in your child's name and kind of shoes he or she ROCKS TO SCHOOL. Decorate the shoe. Please complete this and return so we may add these to our classroom book.
You will also find an activity assignment sheet, these are brief suggestions of areas to study while reading, Three Names, it is a very rich book with a lot to cover. We discussed hyperbole, for example, and counted how many times Great-Grandpa said, "100 years old." Five in a Row asks that you read the story 5 times/days to really discover all that it includes. None of the activities need to come back to school, just enjoy with your child and find something new to discover. If you want more detailed activities I suggest you buy the teacher's manual, there is so much included.
Also if you are intersted in Pete the Cat at the Dixie theatre in Huningdon, TN, come in and sign up! It is Monday, November 20th, 11 AM show.
Have a Great Week!
What a fun & busy day we shared! We were all about Pete the Cat! We all were successful at tying our shoes and even got our LICENSES! We did Pete language arts activities, Pete the cat math activities, and made our own Pete. Please check your child's school envelope and make sure it is empty for next Thursday. I sent home some Pete activities you can share with your child, not a requirement, and no need to return to school. Watch the Pete songs on youtube with your child, they loved them. We also have the opportunity to see Pete the Cat at the Dixie on November 20th, please sign up ASAP so we can get a Reservation made. $8 per ticket, ages 2 & under can sit on a parent's lap for free.
