TUESDAY: We are working on "Tab-Its" books (pamphlets) about Benjamin Franklin and the American Symbols in class. For the month of October I would like each student to pick a person in US History to research, simply 1 source, and fill in a "Tab-Its" book about whom he/she chose. I have the pamphlet ready to go when your student has made a decision. It can be a library resource or online resource, but I would like them reading at an appropriate level, suited to his/her individual needs. I really would appreciate parent support on doing this assignment. I am not testing nor grading your child, but a progress report will be issued at the end of the semester. I will have each student present his/her own report to the class on October 31st, which is also Halloween, he/she may want to dress up as the person chosen. We will have games and snacks, provided by parents that are interested, that day as well.
Please check out this link and be working on words from, Betsy Ross, we are using them in class and the students need to be familiar with the definitions.

WENESDAY: We shared our Solor Eclipse 2017 experiences, and are continuing to define terms and make an Eclipse book. Our stem teams made a rocket that had to fly! Good job teams. New pictures will be posted, check them out.
ART class: we designed our own flags and will paint this week, as well as, prep for our sewing day October 11th. Parents please let me know if you are available to come in and help with this project. (9:00AM) Thank you!
HOMEWORK: Define buoyancy, tell me a thing or 2 you learn.
Thank you for bringing in more Betsy Ross books, now we should be able to do partner reads and some cooperative language arts activities. I added a link to REMIND that I would like the students to open and find a vocab list with definitions. Next Tuesday we will start our word work activities. You were given handouts in the welcome folder on Kick Off night for options to work with words in a way your child will enjoy. You can practice at home as well.

Work on locating and naming the 13 Colonies. Maps are included in the homework envelopes, use them however your student chooses to learn them.
WEDNESDAY PARENTS: FOR ART: T-shirts are due, ADULT LARGE SIZE RED,
If you come to Tutorial on Tuesday you may bring it as well. Mrs. Londa is going out of town and would like to have the shirts beforehand so she can get them ready for project day. I need some parent volunteers to come OCTOBER 11th at 9:00 AM to help with the project, threading needles! Please let me know if your available. The students will learn different hand stitches as well as machining. I am very excited to have this opportunity. She has provided us with a 7 page step by step procedure to make our flag pillows.
Great stem challenge day making incline planes for a vehicle to travel 4 inches! All groups were successful! We studied more on simple machines, wheel and axles.
For science please be prepared to discuss what you did the day of the Eclipse 2017, you may draw, write, or use any other format to share with the class. Please research the definition of Solar & Lunar Eclipse.
Another great day! Teams worked on making a vehicle that can roll with a tissue box as the main structure.
Please discuss simple machines:wheel & axle with your student. We will finish up the lab next week.
Art: We did an amazing job making our own versions of covered wagons out of Popsicle sticks. Please define Collage and look at some examples for next week.
Remember those Red, large t-shirts, you can bring them in any day before the 26th of September.

Great day! Just a quick note to please empty your students envelope from week to week. Today, there are 2 parents notes, the class book list and the red t-shirt reminder, we need them by September 26th in order to have them prepared to make the flag pillows. Please try to provide a copy of Betsy Ross for your student. We are to read chapter 5 & 6 for next Tuesday. We do not have enough copies to do paired reading, the libraries around town should have a copy.
Also included is a syllabus providing topics in each subject area we will cover over the next 6 weeks using the story Betsy Ross: Designer of the Flag, for your information.
HOMEWORK: Please research the Quakers with your student and provide 3 facts in any way your child would like to present to the class. (Examples: Written paper, drawings, brochure style, art project) READ chap 5 & 6.
Wow, were we busy again today! We did 2 cooperative learning STEM experiments and did great! We discussed the Scientific Method and began our science journals defining the terms. Then we described what our STEM groups did and filled in our method sheet to see if we proved our hypothesis or plan, listed the materials, drew the experiment, and noted the results and wrote a final conclusion. All groups were successful and did not need to redesign or retest, each contraption held 100 pennies on the first try!
We traveled outdoors and experimented with our 5 senses. We used our sight to observe then blind folded a partner and each led the other around to see what it is like without our sight. We did a taste test as well as a touch test. Finally, we made a DIY harmonica for sound and discussed why when the straw pieces are closer or farther apart the pitch changes. These were sent home today.
In Art we made our first Betsy Ross project which is a Colonial Flag flip book, and inside it contains a few facts. We will finish up with the star punch and glue on our 13 stars next week, if your child brought it home, just add the stars on each dot in the blue square and color Betsy on pg 4.

We had a wonderfully BUSY first day! The time flew by, I included in the student envelope the first assignment to return NEXT Tuesday. Any assignment handed out on a Tuesday will have the following week to complete and return. We do not have the same students in all our classes so each day will have its own assignment or nothing at all, just check envelopes.
We discussed Betsy Ross today, made some predictions, and read chapter 1 together. I will read chapter 2 on Wednesday during snack time. Please get a copy of the book and read chapter 3, if possible, for next Tuesday. I do plan on reading 2 chapters in class, today we just had a few housekeeping discussions and ran out of time. Please be sure to bring a copy of the book to class on Tuesdays.
Today we learned a little about each other and then tried to graph our favorite foods, pizza being the #1 choice!!
Our assignment this week is to please discuss "timelines" with your child and
AT LEAST make a timeline of 5 personal events in his/her life so far. The birth and first day of HLT will be the 2 ends, just fill in 5 events in between each, from different years. Included in your envelope is a planning sheet and a timeline. The OPTIONAL assignment is to research what World Events were occuring approximately the same time as the dates you chose and graph them on the second timeline. We will be sharing these and then relating to the "timeline" of Betsy Ross; when and where our book is taking place. (Setting)
